Next summer, if you’re looking to escape the heat and immerse yourself in a land of stunning natural beauty, rich history, and unique cultural experiences, then Iceland should be at the top of your travel list. I recently returned from an incredible 7-day journey aboard the Windstar Star Pride, where we circumnavigated Iceland, stopping at multiple ports that offered a perfect blend of adventure, history, and relaxation.
Our Journey Highlights:
Heimay Island: Our first stop was in Heimay, the largest of the Vestmannaeyar archipelago. Known as the "Pompeii of the North," this island has a history marked by pirate raids and volcanic eruptions. We spent the day exploring the island’s natural beauty, including puffin colonies and lava fields, and even learned about its unique cultural events, like death metal festivals.
Seydisfjordur: This charming town was our second stop, where we enjoyed a cultural event at the iconic Blue Church. The following morning, we embarked on a hike to one of the area's most breathtaking waterfalls. Seydisfjordur is also known for its historical significance, having been an Allied base during WWII.
Akureyri: In this northern town, we visited the spectacular Godafoss waterfall and relaxed in the Myvatn Nature Baths. Akureyri’s rich history, dating back to its settlement by Norse Vikings in the 9th century, adds an intriguing layer to its stunning landscapes.
Isafjordur: Our fourth port took us to this quaint fishing village, home to the famous Trolls Throne and the spectacular Dynjandi Falls. We also explored the home of Jon Sigurdson, Iceland's George Washington, adding a touch of historical insight to our adventure.
Grundarfjordur: Our final stop before returning to Reykjavik was in Grundarfjordur, known for its picturesque Kirkjufell mountain and the fascinating Berserkjahraun lava field. Despite the rainy weather, the beauty and history of this town made it a memorable end to our journey.
Reykjavik: The Perfect Beginning and Ending
Our Icelandic adventure wasn’t just about the cruise—our time in Reykjavik before and after the voyage added even more depth to the experience.
Pre-Cruise Exploration: Before setting sail, we spent a day in Reykjavik. We explored the vibrant city, visiting landmarks like the Hallgrímskirkja church and the Sun Voyager sculpture. I can highly recommend the luxurious harbor-front hotel in which we stayed. (Unfortunately, I can also give you some insight into the Landspitali Department of Medicine Emergency Department.)
Post-Cruise Relaxation: After disembarking in Reykjavik, we took a post-cruise tour offered by Windstar. A leisurely day trip took us across the newly formed lava fields from recent eruptions in Reykjanes. One of the highlights was our visit to the Blue Lagoon, where we soaked in the warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by lava fields—a perfect way to conclude the trip. A hint - there is a quiet zone (mobile FREE). (I called it Valhalla.) We also ventured out to Kleifarvatn Lake, one of Iceland's deepest lakes, and the Krysuvik Geothermal Field, where we marveled at bubbling hot springs and steaming vents. We stayed in a different luxurious hotel this time, which offered stunning views of the city and the surrounding landscapes. Our time in Reykjavik was the perfect bookend to an unforgettable Icelandic adventure.
